Spotify is testing AI-generated playlists

Spotify is currently in the testing phase of a novel AI-powered feature designed to create playlists based on text prompts. The discovery was made by a TikTok user, who posted a short clip showcasing the feature and captioned it with surprise. The feature allows users to transform their textual ideas into playlists utilizing artificial intelligence. Located under “Your Library” after selecting the plus sign to initiate a new playlist, the AI provides prompts like “Get focused at work with instrumental electronica” or “Fill the silence with background cafe music.” Subsequently, the AI generates a playlist according to the user’s input.

As reported by TechCrunch, Spotify has acknowledged the testing of AI playlists. However, it remains unclear whether the music streaming giant intends to roll out the feature to the public. The in-app description of the feature encourages users to “Turn your ideas into playlists using AI” and offers a chatbot-like interface for custom inputs. Additionally, it presents users with various prompts, suggesting scenarios like “Get pumped up with fun, beat, and positive songs” or “Explore a niche genre like Witch House.”

Users can choose a prompt, and the AI generates a playlist based on their selection. For instance, a TikTok user opted for the prompt “Explore a niche genre like Witch House.” The AI responded with a playlist titled “Witch House Exploration playlist,” allowing users to refine the playlist by swiping left to remove any undesired songs.

The resulting playlist included tracks from artists such as Grimes, Pearly Drops, Sidewalks and Skeletons, Mr.Kitty, Crystal Castles, Kito and GrimesAI, and Aziya, among others. The effectiveness of the AI in curating a Witch House playlist was left to the judgment of enthusiasts familiar with the genre.

In response to inquiries about the potential public release of AI playlists, Spotify remained tight-lipped. A Spotify spokesperson stated, “We routinely conduct a number of tests. Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader experience, and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have anything further to share at this time.”

If Spotify decides to launch this feature, it could potentially be positioned as an attractive incentive for users to opt for higher subscription tiers. The music streaming industry has witnessed increased integration of artificial intelligence into platforms, and Spotify’s experimentation with AI playlists aligns with its broader strategy to enhance user experience through innovative technologies. Earlier this year, Spotify introduced an AI DJ feature powered by OpenAI technology, providing users with personalized recommendations. The company’s CEO, Daniel Ek, has also expressed interest in using AI to contextualize and personalize content, indicating Spotify’s ongoing commitment to incorporating artificial intelligence into its offerings.
