Trevor Lawrence missed draft day call from Jaguars three times before picking up

Trevor Lawrence almost missed his call to join the Jaguars.

Well, actually, he did. Three times.

“We started calling him and getting a recording,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan said. “[We were] seeing the clock tick away and [we said], ‘Let’s try it again.’ And we got the same recording.”

As Khan explained, Urban Meyer eventually got his own cell phone and that got through to Lawrence. It’s unclear why the initial calls didn’t connect, but nonetheless the Jaguars were able to notify him that he was the pick.

And so, the momentary panic in the Jacksonville war room was over.

Of course, the Jaguars still could’ve selected Lawrence without calling him. There’s no rule against that. Teams typically just do that to let the prospects know that they’re taking them, especially early on. Still, it’s easy to understand why Jacksonville was a bit unnerved that their calls to Lawrence weren’t going through.

But why did they wait so long to call Lawrence? They had a full 10 minutes to get through to him, after all, and they knew going into the night that he was their pick. Well, GM Trent Baalke said, the NFL had something to do with that.

“Well, when the league called, they said you have to wait seven minutes to turn in the card,” Baalke said. “So, we didn’t pick up the phone to call him. We just sat there and he’s sitting on his end wondering why we hadn’t called him.”

That certainly explains why the early stages of the draft always seem to go slower than expected. But after this near mishap, don’t expect the Jaguars — or any other team — to wait to call their top choice.
