The medal matches are nearly complete in both the men’s and women’s Olympic soccer tournaments with the semifinal stage played out on Monday (women) and Tuesday (men).
In Tuesday’s first semifinal, reigning gold-medal holders Brazil will look to advance to another final after narrowly edging a spirited Egypt side in the quarterfinals. The South American side will face 2012 gold medalist Mexico in the next round. Mexico beat Brazil for the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic final.
Pre-tournament favorite Spain has also made it through to the semis, surviving a scare from Ivory Coast in their quarterfinal match. In the semifinals it will face host nation Japan, which needed penalty kicks to get by New Zealand.
The four semifinalists in men’s and women’s tournaments are guaranteed to play in a medal match: the gold/silver tournament final or the bronze medal match for third place.

Women’s Olympic Soccer Tournament
The women’s semifinals were played on Monday and they opened with an upset as No. 8-ranked Canada knocked off the pre-tournament favorites USA on a penalty kick scored by Jessie Fleming. The Canadians advance to the women’s soccer gold-medal match for the first time in program history, while the U.S. women will be playing in their first bronze-medal match.
Sweden will be looking to cap a strong Olympic tournamenet with a gold medal victory against Canada after the European side advanced past Australia in the semis. Fridolina Rolfo got the only goal of the match although Australia’s Sam Kerr scored a goal that was disallowed for a previous foul.
Australia will look to win its first-ever Olympic medal against the USA, while Sweden and Canada face off in Thursday night’s gold medal match (Friday in Japan).
