Mets ace Jacob deGrom is dealing with another health issue.
The right-hander left his start Wednesday night vs. the Cubs after three innings because of soreness in his pitching shoulder. DeGrom was starting five days after his previous start was cut short because of elbow tendinitis.
DeGrom retired all nine Cubs batters he faced, striking out eight of them, and he was regularly throwing his fastball around 100 mph. But he appeared to feel something in his arm after this pitch to Eric Sogard.
Mets broadcasters noted he was taking more time between pitches afterward. He left for the locker room after retiring Chicago in the third. Sean Reid-Foley came on in relief for the fourth.
DeGrom told reporters postgame (the Mets won 6-3) that the soreness — which felt in the back of his shoulder — came on suddenly.
“Felt good warming up, felt really good in the first and second inning, and then there in the third my shoulder was sore,” he said. “This is getting old. I want to be out there competing and coming out of these games with these little — hopefully this turns out to be nothing. (I) said something, hopefully before it was . . . (I) didn’t want it to turn into anything serious.”
He said in-game tests ruled out a serious issue; next up for him is an MRI on Thursday to “check off that box.”
Mets manager Luis Rojas said he was “not on the high level of concern.”
DeGrom left his start Friday vs. the Padres after six innings because of the elbow tendinitis. DeGrom told reporters after that game that he had experienced elbow problems in the past and that he was optimistic he would not have to miss a turn.
He missed three turns earlier this season because of lat irritation and side discomfort.
“I think it’s three separate issues,” deGrom said when asked whether he thought the injuries were interconnected. “I think the lat was something to do with a swing and the elbow I didn’t think too much of. Like I said, I was pretty confident that that was nothing and I’m pretty confident that this is nothing.”
