D.C. authorities are addressing a series of Christmas morning accidents that occurred along a section of Interstate 295.
D.C. Fire and EMS, along with the D.C. Department of Transportation, have reported four separate car accidents between 11:40 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 1 a.m. on Christmas Day.
The first two minor crashes took place in the northbound lanes at 11:40 p.m., according to officials.
Around midnight, while DDOT was clearing the initial crashes, another collision occurred. This incident resulted in a vehicle overturning in the southbound lanes, trapping a man underneath the car.
As emergency personnel worked to free the trapped driver, a fourth and final crash occurred in the same stretch of I-295 between Eastern Avenue and Burroughs Avenue Northeast.
Officials reported that the man in the overturned car had to be extracted using equipment and was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. There were no other occupants in the vehicle, and no additional serious injuries were reported.
DDOT indicated that all lanes were cleared just after 1 a.m.
